Student of the Month Carlos Echerria Congratulations !! The Tenets of the Hwarang In the Nov 2000 newsletter we talked about the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla. Young noblemen called the hwarang were Silla's greatest warriors. See how many of the five tenets of the hwarang you can find in our Songham Spirits of Taekwondo. COURTESY (Ye-Ui): Courtesy includes kindness, good manners, politeness, and respect. INTEGRITY (Yom-Chi): The main path to integrity is honesty. When you don't tell the truth, you separate yourself from reality. When you tell the truth, you stay one (integrated) with reality. PERSEVERANCE (In-Nae): This means "Don't give up", no matter what obstacles you face. To maintain your loyalty to anything, you must have perseverance. SELF-CONTROL (Guk-Gi): Self-control in taekwondo means many things. It means that you have control of your physical body. You also have control over your emotions -- you don't hit someone just because they make you mad. You also control your ability to focus your mind. INDOMITABLE SPIRIT (Baekjul-Bool Gool): This means you stand up for your beliefs and principles even if you have to make sacrifices. |
