World Championships All ATA black belts have the opportunity to compete for Top Ten for their division. Black belts earn points by competing at regional tournaments and can earn double points at World Championships and National events. The tournament year begins and ends with World Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas every June. The top competitors in each division compete for the title of World Champion. Congratulations to Mr. Nelson for placing third in this year's forms competition! (For more details, see www.ataonline.com/mat/index.htm.) |
Student of the Month Sofia Saadi Congratulations !! TKD Q&A Q: How can you tell the rank of a black belt? A: Sometimes you can't tell for sure. At the Boca club, if you see a black belt with a name on the belt, then he or she is at least a 2nd degree decided. If the belt is thicker, the black belt is at least a 3rd degree. If the black belt has a uniform with a vertical black stripe on the outside edge of the pants, then he or she is at least a 4th degree. Q: What do the other uniform markings mean? A: A black stripe along the lower edge of the uniform indicates that the black belt has no official instructor status, but instead is concentrating on his or her own skills. A collar stripe indicates instructor status. The red-white-and-blue collar stripe indicates a junior trainee instructor -- learning to teach but not old enough for the adult program. A red collar stripe indicates an adult trainee instructor. Nationally certified instructors (those who have met all the requirements and passed all of the ATA's written and physical tests) wear a black collar stripe. School owners who are nationally certified instructors sometimes have a slightly wider black stripe. Q: What are the new state championships all about? A: The ATA already tracks tournament points for black belts for the national Top Ten and World Championship programs. Starting this year, they will start tracking points for color belt students and determine, based on tournament points, who is the champion for each division in each state for each category of event (forms, sparring, weapons). The divisions for black belts are the same as for the World Championship. Because color belts change so rapidly during a year, those divisions are based on age and gender -- not rank.
